Al Montoya traded to Islanders

Al Montoya is heading back to the East coast. The former first round pick of the New York Rangers back in the 2004 draft was traded this evening to the New York Islanders in exchange for a sixth round pick.

In 21 games with the San Antonio Rampage this season, the 25-year-old is 11-8 with a 3.19 GAA and .891 save percentage. He has lost playing time to Matt Climie. Montoya’s numbers this season are similar to what he has put up throughout his entire career in the minors.

Acquiring Montoya makes sense for the Isles goaltending depth. Kevin Poulin suffered a freakish injury the other night and is out for the season. Nathan Lawson and Rick DiPietro are also out with injuries and Dwayne Roloson is no longer with the team after being traded last month. Montoya could be in store for some significant playing time.
