Arizona Coyotes fielding offer for potential partial sale

So a handful of minutes ago (okay, it was an hour ago, but whatever), the Arizona Coyotes got their second punch to the gut of the day.

First, fans were blown away, when the team reassigned Max Domi to the OHL. He’ll be spending one final year playing for the London Knights, while the four remaining members of the Fantastic Five still have a pipe dream of making the squad out of the AHL.

Now, it seems that the team is going to be sold- yep, again.

  • At first, it seemed like it could have been a rumor- after all, when I reported the story for the FanSided News Desk, it seemed like the only valid source of the tale was the New York Post. In the Post’s article, it sounded like the team would be selling a 51 % share of the team to Andrew Barroway, maybe the most desperate potential hockey team owner on the planet.

Previously, Barroway has attempted to buy both the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders. Apparently, his snub by both Metropolitan Division franchises has made him both reckless and a little bit manic- if the rumors are true, he’s working on negotiations to purchase a 51 % share of the team for almost double what ICE Arizona paid for the franchise as a whole.

The fact that the team is still lacking financial stability is one of the things that Arizona nay-sayers have been citing as a reason to move the franchise somewhere more profitable. The sale seems to be under negotiations that would keep team president Anthony Leblanc and ICE Arizona still partial owners of the team, though, and would most likely not result in the team moving elsewhere.

The team has released a limited statement on the sale:

"“In response to media reports today, the Arizona Coyotes can confirm that IceArizona has been in discussions with an unsolicited potential investor who is interested in joining the partnership. This should be viewed as an incredibly positive development and is due to the successful first year of IceArizona’s ownership.”"

Hey, we’ll trust you on this. Anything to keep hockey in the desert.
