Hooray! More signings!

The Coyotes are, as always, delightfully late to the contract party. Just hours (well, days) after the New York Islanders signed their second first-round (who was basically an elevated second-round) 2014 draft pick, the ‘Yotes have announced that they  signed  their 2013 draft second-round pick, Laurent Dauphin.

  • First, I want to just say that I hope this guy does well with the Coyotes, because his name is regal as hell. Laurent Dauphin. Do any of you have an intimate knowledge of French history? I do, because I used to watch Marie Antoinette a lot- and his name literally means ‘Laurent, the heir apparent of the French throne’. I even Wikipedia’ed it just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming things- it’s true.

It’s also nice to see the team giving him a contract, because… ya know. Good faith. It’s common knowledge that the Arizona Coyotes don’t like to jump the gun with contracts, so seeing this guy get one should cause all of us to breathe a sigh of relief. More Coyotes with scorepower being given money! Yay!

Back to Dauphin though, he’s a good prospect to have.

He led him team, the Chicoutimi of the QMJHL, in goals, assists, and overall points last season. He was like the Tyler Seguin of his team, and he’s headed back there for another full year of domination. Last season’s stats gave him 54 points (24G, 30A) in 52 games, which he should aim to top this season. Will he need to work on his +/- this season, so he doesn’t end with a -8 again? Sure. Ultimately, though, all he needs to focus on is getting stronger, faster, and continuing to up his scorepower.

I decided to go look at his prospect page, and glean some information about a player whose jersey I very clearly want to have. Here’s what I’ve got for ya-

    • He’s a huge fan of contradictions. According to his prospect bio page, he’s simultaneously a huge Habs fan and Patrice Bergeron‘s biggest admirer. I give him props for accepting Bergeron’s superhuman ability to be one of the most well-rounded hockey players on the planet, but don’t really know how I feel about the whole Montreal thing.
    • He’s embarassingly Canadian. He loves shows about California, playing EA Sports’ NHL, and probably thinks that Molson is the best beer out there.
    • He likes Nickelback.

On a more serious note, the Quebec native was described as a “jack-of-all trades” in his original prospect report, and nothing seems to have changed there. He truly models himself after Bergeron, working as hard on smooth skating and impressive levels of endurance as he does on effective shots and fancy passing routes. He’s known for his ability to just keep moving throughout a play.

Hopefully, the Arizona Coyotes are headed for some big things with this guy.
