Are the Arizona Coyotes getting a rebuild?

TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday that new Arizona owner Andrew Barroway and GM Don Maloney had met to discuss the future of the Coyotes.

According to LeBrun, the pair agreed to “blow this up, and let’s have a full rebuild in the desert.”

  • The Coyotes already took a step in that direction when they traded goaltender Devan Dubnyk Thursday to a conference rival, the Minnesota Wild.

Rumors have begun circling that big names such as  defenseman Keith Yandle and center Antoine Vermette are also the trading block heading into the March deadline.

Considering the Coyotes’ current place in the standing this appears to be the right move for the club.

No professional team ever has the intention of playing the game to lose, but with a serious chance to land a top draft choice like McDavid or Eichel, can you really blame the Coyotes for choosing to blow up their roster now?

With top prospect Max Domi set to begin his NHL career in the 2015-16 season and up and comers such as Henrik Samuelsson in the pipe line, there’s a lot to be excited about going forward in the desert — especially if the Coyotes can manage to land one of those top two picks.

Of course, the team has claimed otherwise — in recent interviews, everyone from the team president (Anthony Leblanc) to the GM have insisted that the team will simply be moving pieces to find the best fit.

Is one smarter for the team than the other? It might make more sense to avoid a total rebuild if Max Domi is headed to the desert next season, but the Arizona Coyotes could also want to make sure as little retooling as possible is done over the course of his career — in which case they’d want to swap out their key tools now, rather than later.

It really comes down to wording, but one thing’s clear — if you’re a Coyotes fan, it’s time to buckle up.
