Arizona Coyotes Fan Playoff Profile: Ducks vs Flames
The Calgary Flames Are On Fire, And Hoping To “Roast” The Ducks. I Just Wish The Arizona Coyotes Were Playing.
The battle of Western Canada (Vancouver Canucks vs Calgary Flames) was won over the weekend by the upstart Flames, four games to two.
That means that the Flames next opponent will be the Western Conference first place team, the Anaheim Ducks. The Flames may have drawn a very tough team to play in the playoffs. But, the battle with Anaheim has other complications for the Calgary club. The Flames need to win at Honda Center if they are to move on into the next round of the playoffs.
That has not been an easy task for them, since they have not won there in the last 20 games (Yep, that’s not a typo). Their record there is a meager 0-15-5, including two losses this past season. Their last victory there seems like forever — January 19, 2004 to be exact, when they won handily 5-1.

In fact, their overall record in Anaheim is even more alarming — 8-24-6-7 (.322 win percentage) , which isn’t anything to make the Flames fans too confident going into this series.
This series will pit two teams who never say die, as the Ducks won twelve games after trailing after two periods, and the Flames were not far off from that, at ten. Then, add in the Ducks record-setting three consecutive come from behind wins after trailing for two periods, and you’ve got some cardiac hockey coming your way.
My fellow editor, Nadia Archuleta of Mile High Sticking, is sticking with the Ducks to go all the way in her bracket breakdown. I’ve already warned her that the Flames may scorch the Ducks’ feathers so badly that they will need to seek the closest source of water, and that will need to be the ice. The Ducks have been sitting around waiting for their next opponent (victim), and the Flames may give them a good series.
Watch Hudler and Gaudreau, who must provide some punch to compete with the Ducks’ arsenal. I think they’ve got what it takes.
The only time these two clubs have faced each in the Stanley Cup playoffs was during the ’05-’06 season. Anaheim won that series four games to three by winning game seven in Calgary. The Calgary Flames did manage to win one of three games in Anaheim, and will need to win at least one in this series to have a shot.
When I attended a Arizona Coyotes vs Calgary Flames game in January, I had a chance to get a few Calgary fans attending the game to comment on the Coyotes. They were all three very disappointed that Shane Doan (a western Canada product) was not playing due to an injury. They were all boasting of their young forward Johnny Gaudreau, whom I told them I was there to see play.
When I worked at the arena, I constantly found the Canadian fans to be very knowledgable about their national sport, and gregarious folks. They were always amazed when they saw empty seats at our arena, stating “Wow, we always have sellouts, and it’s hard to get a ticket to a game.”
All I know is I’m missing NHL hockey here in Phoenix, Arizona — and wishing I had a ticket to see the Ducks vs the Flames in this highly entertaining match-up.
Okay, Nadia… it’s your turn to tell me why you think the Ducks will extinguish the Flames… oh no… why am I giving you cliches to use against me?
