Arizona Coyotes Do Some House Cleaning In Portland; Coyotes on Team Canada, U.S.A. Win Medals At IIHF

Okay… it officially spring, but the Arizona Coyotes took it literally and fired the entire coaching staff (per mainehockeyjournal.com) consisting of Head Coach Roy Edwards, Assistant coaches John Slaney and Trent Whitfield; also let go as well were the equipment and medical staffs.

The Arizona Coyotes declined to comment on the moves… why is that? It happens quite often when an AHL affiliation by an NHL team changes. New staff is typical, but why act like it didn’t happen?  🙂
Head Coach Roy Edwards mentioned that he was informed on Mother’s Day, which was May 10th. So, why the secrecy?

It was kinda a surprise move in that the Pirates went from dead last over the ’13-’14 season to making it barely this season to the Calder Cup playoffs. Also, why was Edwards given a contract extension last spring (what’s with this spring thing?) by the parent Arizona Coyotes, plus was named General Manager. Perhaps he should have seen the writing on the

ice when many of the General Manager duties, like player development of prospects were slowly transferred to Assistant GM Darcy Regier as the season moved along.

"“Ray is a good man,” said Pirates Chief Operating Officer Brad Church. “I’d been hands on for the last season and a half and I thought as GM he did a good job on surrounding the prospects with quality character veterans and put together a competitive team with what he was given by the Coyotes.”"

  • This all is going down with Arizona considering some potentially important front office maneuvers this offseason. Sean Burke, the club’s goalie coach and assistant to GM Don Maloney, is interviewing for other gigs across the league and it’s expected former Sabres GM Darcy Regier, brought aboard last season, will take on a more prominent role (per the mainehockeyjournal.com website, Regier had already assumed some of Edwards’ duties as AHL GM). Maybe Burke will be seeking an AHL coaching position? I’m just sayin’.. if he’s interested in getting into coaching he can’t just jump into the NHL without minor league experience, right?

Mike Smith Earns Gold Medal, As Canada Thumps Russia 6-1; Three Other Coyotes Grab Bronze Medals

Is Smitty back? It certainly seems that way. After shutting out the competition for 190:03, he finally gave up a goal, allowing one to Russia’s Evgeni Malkin with 7:13 remaining in the third period. Canada won in a laugher 6-1. He had terrific statistics: Smith finished the tournament ranked second in goals-against average (1.50) and third in save percentage (.930).

Smitty needs to make room for this gold medal on his mantle, since he also won one in the Socchi Winter Olympics last year as well. He did not play, and was the third string goalie then, but in this tournament he saw most of the playing time as the first string net-minder.

Does this give all Arizona Coyotes fans promise that Smith may be turning around his game? I think so, he certainly has got his confidence back, and that is vital to any goalie’s performance in the NHL. He had stated he was going to do whatever was necessary to get back to his level of play he displayed before he signed his multi-year contract for $5.667 a year until 2019. The team is putting all their pucks into one basket by sticking with Smith, even though he had a very disappointing season.

Earlier on Sunday, Team USA beat Czech Republic, 3-0, in the bronze medal game. Coyotes defenseman Connor Murphy and forward Mark Arcobello played for USA while Coyotes defenseman John Moore sat the game out because of an upper-body injury.

So, all in all, the only players who came home empty handed was Martin Erat (Czech Republic), and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. After the title game, OEL was named to the tournament’s all-star team. Playing for Sweden, Ekman-Larsson led all defensemen with 12 points in eight games. He also led all players with 10 assists.

Gee… now what? How many more days until training camp? Maybe 113 or so… I don’t know about you, but the long, hot summer seems to drag on without hockey. It’s okay I’ve been recording all the IIHF games, and NHL playoff games to hold me over… that is if I haven’t filled up the disc!
