Arizona Coyotes: Must Reach New Salary Cap Low Limit

Arizona Coyotes Have Money To Spend To Reach Cap Minimum Set At $52.8M

The current Coyotes salary cap hit per NHLnumbers.com is $34.479 million. So, doing some quick math, that leaves them with $18.321 million to spend to reach the required lower limit.

What does that mean? It means, even with the hit they may take signing Mikkel Boedker (negotiations are on-going) they will still have plenty of room to sign other free agents, and take on salary involving trades. Boedker will probably receive a multi-year contract in the range of $4-5M a year.

Per rotoworld.com:

Contract talks between the Coyotes and Mikkel Boedker are still ongoing.

"“Hopefully we’ll get that done in relatively short order because he’s important to us,” GM Don Maloney said. “He’s a key guy for us.”"

The negotiations have been “moving forward,” which is good news for the Coyotes. Boedker, who becomes a restricted free agent in July, notched 14 goals and 28 points in 45 games this past season. In 2013-14, he tallied 19 goals and 51 points in 82 contests. He is only one season shy of potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent, so it’s expected that he’ll get a long-term deal.

The team has some UFA’s whom they will probably shed: (these are MY projections)

  • Martin Erat $4.5M cap hit – GONE
  • B.J Crombeen – $1.15M cap hit – GONE
  • Dave Moss – $.800M cap hit – GONE

Total Savings – $6.45M

The following RFA’s who are either staying or on the bubble:

  • Mikkel Boedker – $2.55M – KEEP $18M for four years
  • Craig Cunningham – $.132 M – MARGINAL (.500M if he stays)
  • Tye McGuinn – $.132M – MARGINAL (.600M if he stays)
  • Klas Dahlbeck – $.165M – KEEP $1.2M for one year
  • John Moore – $.192M – KEEP $2.5M for two years
  • Mark Arcobello – $.194M – KEEP $1.5M for one year

Total Expenditure: $9.3M

Difference = ($2.85M) over

Take the $18.321M needed to get to the basement cap limit and you still have $15.471M to spend.

We all know GM Don Maloney wants another experienced D-man to supplement his blue-line corp. I suggested Matt Irwin from the Sharks who will demand at least $2.5M to sign, along with Matt Beleskey ($4M to sign) of the Ducks. SO… we’re down to a measly $8.971M left to play with.. I mean spend.

Of course, let’s not jump to conclusions… IF the rumors are true that at least two of six teams who have contacted GM Don Maloney about the third overall pick in the draft on Friday, are very interested in moving down to that pick, they may trade a player Maloney wants that will affect the salary cap numbers a bit.

Lots CAN happen, and that’s what makes this time of year magical. The GM’s like Maloney really earn their salaries wheelin’ and dealin’ with each other. The NHL GM’s met in Las Vegas today (6/23) to open a busy two day schedule to discuss salary cap limits, overtime format (ways to avoid so many shootouts), coach’s challenge, etc. The GM’s will definitely being testing each others’ openness to a possible trade. They will meet again tomorrow.

Let’s see if GM Don Maloney can put some blockbuster deals together in conjunction with that valuable third overall pick. By next week the Arizona Coyotes may be difficult to recognize, even with a program.
