This Could Be Tobias Rieder’s Year To Show Arizona Coyotes He Is Here To Stay

A pleasant surprise last season was the excellent performance from forward Tobias Rieder, a native of Landshut, Germany. He came out and showed the team that he has NHL skills, and wants to use them.

Tobias Reider was a 2011 draft selection at #114 of the Edmonton Oilers. His offensive abilities became immediately known.

While playing for the Kitchener Rangers in the 2011-12 season he had 42g, 43a for 85 points in 60 games. He followed that with an outstanding playoff series of 16 games with 13g, 14a for 27 points.

The following season with Kichener he had 27g, 29a, for 56 points in 52 games, and again played well in the playoffs collecting 2g, 10a, for 12 points in 9 games.

On March 29, 2013 the Oilers traded Tobias Rieder to the Arizona Coyotes for Kale Kessey. It’s turned out to be a good trade for the Desert Dogs. Kessy hasn’t done much of anything developing, while Rieder is on the cusp of playing consistently with the Coyotes.

After being acquired by the Arizona Coyotes, Tobias Rieder was assigned to Portland of the AHL. During the 2013-14 season he accumulated 28g, 20a, for 48 points in 64 games.

Then, the following season at Portland he played just nine games, netting four goals and one assist. That was enough for the Coyotes management to give him a call-up to see what he could do in the NHL.

He didn’t disappoint. In 72 games he scored 13 goals, 8 assists for 21 points.

More importantly, he had three short-handed goals (two in one power play versus his old team, the Oilers), and one game winner. If you look at his shot total of 189, he was tied with Shane Doan with OEL collecting the high for the team with 264.

If Tobias Rieder can bring up his shot percentage from 6.9, his goal production will increase. He just needs to work on finishing off, because he is an awesome breakaway forward.

With the addition of Max Domi, Anthony Duclair, and possibly Brendan Perlini or even Christian Dvorak, the overall team speed will be off the charts. They need to use that speed to catch the slower defensemen off-guard, and create scoring opportunites.

Tobias Rieder’s potential is limitless, he just needs to start showing everyone what he can do, if he puts his mind to it.
