After the Arizona Coyotes suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss against the Red Wings on Thursday night, they were shutout by the New Jersey Devils despite a strong showing.

Very little has been able to slow down the surging Arizona Coyotes in recent weeks. Very little except themselves.

They lost to the Red Wings on Thursday night thanks to the recurring penalty parade that seems to bite this team every third or fourth game. Then they lost to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday after they dropped a goose egg on five power play attempts.

Those aren’t the only issues that cropped up over the past two games, but they are the most notable.

After performing so well on the man advantage in recent games, the Coyotes could find no solution to Cory Schneider with the power play. Nor could they at even strength.

The 5v5 scoring chances looked like this:

Yes. By the midway point the Yotes turned on the jets and obliterated the Devils. Someone just forgot to send Schneider the memo that he was supposed to let in 3 or 4 goals.

Despite what the scoreboard said on Thursday night and again on Saturday afternoon, the Arizona Coyotes were the aggressors for large parts of both matchups. One could argue that the two games were some of their five or ten best efforts of the season.

Unfortunately, hockey is a game of luck as well as effort. The Coyotes have been the beneficiaries of luck throughout the season, winning games they shouldn’t while being outshot and outchanced to a large degree. This time the shoe was on the other foot.

This team will shake it off, and with Louis Domingue back in net on Monday night they’ll resume the quest for locking up a playoff spot this spring.

NHL needs to do the right thing with John Scott [AZCentral – Paola Boivin]

Everyone Got What They Deserved in John Scott All-Star Fiasco, Except John Scott [Bleacher Report – Adrian Dater]

"But John Scott is a man who was badly hurt Friday morning—a man who entered the Gila River Arena here fully expecting to resume his role as a player with the Arizona Coyotes but who left soon after, according to two people who saw him, looking “devastated” and “upset.” He was the victim of a well-intended joke all gone wrong."

Connauton Hoping for a Long Stop With Coyotes [Today’s Slapshot – Craig Morgan]

"Stefan Elliott walked into locker room at the Ice Den, sat down at his locker and stared across the space as media gathered to interview his replacement on the Coyotes blue line. It was an uncomfortable, underappreciated and all too common moment in the life of a bottom-of-the roster NHL player. “It’s not exactly the best time…” said Elliott, who was waived on Thursday to make room for Kevin Connauton. “It’s a business and that’s their decision. There’s nothing I can do about it. I just have to keep working hard and put my head down.”"

Halfway Through, How Do The Coyotes Add Up? [Along The Boards – Sarah Hall]

"Antoine Vermette has fallen back to earth statistically. Yes he still boasts a 55.6 faceoff percentage, but his play has been sporadic at best as of late. It may be the cup hangover effect from last summer, but something has changed in his play from when the Coyotes had traded him to when he came back. He’s making bad judgment plays and taking unnecessary penalties in the offensive and neutral zone."
