The Arizona Coyotes lost in overtime to the Chicago Blackhawks after a back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands several times.

94. Final. 4. 121. 5

The Arizona Coyotes entered Thursday night’s contest trying to shake off the stink of two losses in which they gave up five goals.

Unfortunately for the Yotes, fives seem to be the magic number when it comes to pucks going into their own net.

After Marian Hossa appeared to put the Blackhawks up 1-0, Dave Tippett challenged that Louis Domingue had been interfered with and finally won.

The goal was overturned and Joel Quenneville was livid. His tirade earned the Coyotes a free power play.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson was left all alone and beat Corey Crawford for the 1-0 Arizona Coyotes lead.

Hossa got it back early in the second period to tie the game at 1-1, however.

A little over a minute later the Coyotes were on the power play when Marian Hossa broke free on a shorthanded breakaway. The Coyotes went to Hossa like a moth to flame which left Jonathan Toews wide open for an easy goal. 2-1 Blackhawks.

Mikkel Boedker struck back on the power play with his first goal in 16 games to tie the game at 2-2.

Just nine seconds later, Jordan Martinook got the Coyotes on the board again with a dirty goal. Coyotes lead 3-2.

Less than two minutes after Martinook’s goal, Patrick Kane evened the game up yet again after beating Domingue. 3-3.

In the third period, offsetting penalties to Shane Doan and Marian Hossa put the two teams down a man to enjoy some 4-on-4 hockey.

Artem Anisimov schooled the Arizona Coyotes defense and found Michal Rozsival for a lay-up. Coyotes trailed 4-3.

Shane Doan beat Crawford with an ugly wraparound goal to tie it back up at 4-4 and the Coyotes rode the tie into overtime.

In the OT stanza, chances were had at both ends before Jonathan Toews beat Domingue to seal the win for the bad guys.

Chicago Blackhawks  win 5-4.

Player Performance

Shane Doan scored his 18th goal of the season and had a pretty good night on the ice. His line was the catalyst for two even strength goals.

Louis Domingue had his third straight uneven game. He stopped shots that maybe he shouldn’t have, and allowed goals that he shouldn’t have as well. His confidence definitely seems rattled and he has now given up 15 goals in the past three games.

While he wasn’t a very heralded signing, Brad Richardson has certainly proven his worth to the Arizona Coyotes this season. His partnership with Doan and Martinook on the third line has been dynamite, and Richardson almost put the puck in the net tonight on more than one occasion.

Anthony Duclair had just one shot on goal and was a minus-3 on the night. He did have a few nice hustle plays, however. He’s still looking better than he did pre-demotion.

It wasn’t a pretty night for Max Domi, either. It may have been his worst night all season. He had one particular giveaway which allowed the Blackhawks to camp in the Coyotes zone for an extended shift.

More from Howlin' Hockey

Oliver Ekman-Larsson now has 15 goals on the season and had a three point night to take over sole possession of the Arizona Coyotes’ points lead. Not good enough to be an All-Star though. Nope.

Arizona Coyotes Player of the Game

I’m going to throw up Jordan Martinook. He scored his third goal in his last five games and his line has been just about the only engine working for the Coyotes of late.

The View From The 200 Level

The Arizona Coyotes lucked into a point tonight with a few greasy goals and a little bit of tenacity.

Dave Tippett won his first goaltender interference challenge and that reversal allowed the Coyotes to jump on the board with an early 1-0 lead.

The Yotes led twice on the evening but were unable to maintain either lead for more than five minutes, with the second lead lasting just 1:35.

Thankfully, the power play and penalty kill were both active and effective for the first time in some time, but it was all for naught thanks to some questionable officiating and Louis Domingue having another up and down night.

With Domingue a shell of his former self and the Coyotes facing the Ducks tomorrow night on a back-to-back, it looks like Tippett will have to go to Anders Lindback once again.

That does not bode well for an Arizona Coyotes team in dire need of points.

They will be one point back of the Ducks at the end of tonight’s games and a loss tomorrow would put them three points out of the playoffs after being as many as five points up on the third place team at one point in January.

The Arizona Coyotes faceoff against the Anaheim Ducks at 8:00 PM.
