The Arizona Coyotes have recalled goalie Marek Langhamer from their AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons. General manager Don Maloney also announced that they have sent Niklas Treutle back to the AHL.

The Arizona Coyotes have made yet another move in the saga of musical chairs surrounding their goaltending situation.

Marek Langhamer has been recalled from the Springfield Falcons to backup goaltender Louis Domingue.

Niklas Treutle, the Arizona Coyotes’ starting goaltender in the team’s 5-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night, has been sent back to Springfield.

The move is not a huge surprise after Dave Tippett’s comments post game about Treutle’s play and readiness for the NHL.

Here is the Coyotes’ press release regarding the moves:

"Arizona Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have recalled goalie Marek Langhamer and assigned goalie Niklas Treutle to the Springfield Falcons, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate (AHL). The 21-year-old Langhamer posted a 6-6-1 record with a .885 save percentage (SV%) and 3.52 goals against average (GAA) in 13 games with Springfield. The Moravska Trebova, Czech Republic native also played in eight games with Rapid City (ECHL) and registered a 5-2-1 record with a .935 SV% and 2.23 GAA. Langhamer spent the three previous seasons with Medicine Hat (WHL) and had a career record of 82-53-10 in 149 games which includes playoffs. He was drafted by the team in the seventh round (184th overall) in the 2012 Entry Draft. The 24-year-old Treutle was 0-1-0 with a .750 SV% in two games with the Coyotes."

Niklas Treutle had an all-time bad debut as a starter for the Coyotes’ against the Ducks. He gave up 5 goals on 16 shots in that game, and it seemed clear afterward that head coach Dave Tippett was uncomfortable with the decision to start him.

More from Howlin' Hockey

Tipp felt that he had no choice with Louis Domingue fatigued, but the move to send Treutle down and call up Marek Langhamer shows their current faith in Treutle’s NHL viability.

If we are comparing the only comparables we have between the 21-year-old Langhamer and 24-year-old Treutle, we have to look at their statistics backstopping the Springfield Falcons.

Langhamer is sporting an .885 save percentage in 13 games in the AHL, while Treutle played in 26 games with Springfield and has a .909 save percentage. That doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence in Langhamer’s immediate ability to step in and take a start or two for the Coyotes moving forward.

It also doesn’t suggest that he’s even a viable candidate to come in as relief for Domingue on a bad night.

The Arizona Coyotes are in a tough spot with their current goaltending situation.

Next: Treutle Shelled In First NHL Start

Thanks to injuries, their AHL starter has been their de facto NHL starter for more than two months. Now, their ECHL starter – the fifth goaltender on the depth chart – is their NHL backup.

The rest of March could be very ugly unless Marek Langhamer can show some promise or Domingue reverts to his January form.

Get well soon Mike Smith!
