The Arizona Coyotes came away with a point in Vancouver after falling in overtime to the Canucks. The Coyotes led 2-0 early in the second before dropping the extra point to Vancouver.

104. Final. 2. 121. 3

The good news is that the Arizona Coyotes got a point.

The bad news is that they led the Canucks by two goals at one point and then gave up three unanswered tallies to lose in overtime.

Louis Domingue was rock solid early and Jacob Markstrom had some issues. By the end of the game their roles had reversed.

Tobias Rieder scored his first goal in 14 games. The Yotes were on a 3-for-32 stretch on the power play until Rieder’s goal.

Kevin Connauton continued to do his best Oliver Ekman-Larsson impression with the Swede out of the lineup, scoring his fifth goal of the season.

Radim Vrbata and Luca Sbisa scored for the Canucks in regulation.

Markus Granlund scored the game-winning goal for Vancouver in overtime to seal the victory.

Vancouver Canucks win 3-2.

The View From The 200 Level

With another loss – albeit in overtime – in the column, the Arizona Coyotes are tied with the Buffalo Sabers for the fifth lowest points total in the league at 63.

More from Howlin' Hockey

They are now 28-32-7 on the season, and are beginning to fade further and further away from that .500 record in the win/loss column that they were able to maintain for so long this season.

The Coyotes took three penalties in the first period and had no power play opportunities of their own. Discipline continues to be a major issue for this team, particularly early in games.

There was a whole stanza of back-to-back penalties that was like the Battle of Helm’s Deep for Louis Domingue. He was Théoden waiting for reinforcements to arrive to bail him out. They finally arrived in the second period.

Tobias Rieder’s power play goal early in the second period was huge for the team’s confidence. Kevin Connauton’s follow up a little less than five minutes later gave the impression that the Arizona Coyotes might be able to squeeze the life out of Vancouver from there on out.

Another breakaway was given up by the Coyotes’ defense and none other than old flame Radim Vrbata put the puck past Domingue.  Late in the second Sbisa scored on Domingue with a shot that Louis would surely like to have back.

Those plays have come to define Domingue’s past month. He’ll pull out the spectacular saves like we saw in the first period, but then an innocuous puck will leak by him once or twice a game and derail all that effort and theatrics. As I said earlier today, his recent play is not unlike another goalie who is under contract with the Arizona Coyotes.

Domingue can not and should not shoulder all of the blame, however. It was by his sheer force of will that the Yotes were even in the game beyond the first period to begin with.

He managed to do just enough to get the Coyotes one point. Now head coach Dave Tippett needs to figure out how to turn that result into two points going forward.
