Why Canadian Coaches and Broadcasters Wear A Red Poppy

facebooktwitterreddit

If you watch NHL on the Fly or have Center Ice and can see all the games, the broadcasters and coaches are wearing a red poppy in the left lapel. The reason is to pay remembrance to those who died in battle during World War I. I’ve attached a link that further explains this tribute http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day . Remerbrance Day, now called Veteran’s Day in the states, is celebrated at the 11th minute of the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae
Written in Flanders on May 3, 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
