He is a fan favorite. I like, love the guy as well. I thought 4-5 million a year was the number and yes the Coyotes overpaid a bit. I have absolutely no problem with it. It is that commitment, same given to Maloney and Tippett that make this franchise viable and worthy of keeping. It has never been better for the Coyotes. From management and coaches, whom are called the best pairing in the business. Our Captain stayed and re-signed. Now Mike Smith who is affectionately referred to as Smitty will be a long term fixture in net for the Coyotes. What other questions would you have as an investor looking to purchase a team?

Mike Smith had one of the best seasons in the NHL and then the lockout happened. Without a normal camp and pre-season Smitty got injured and was never 100% last season. Maloney knows how good Smitty can be especially in Tippett’s system under Burke’s guidance. This is evident with a 6 year deal keeping him with this franchise regardless where they end up.

Speaking of ownership the City of Glendale is in talks wondering if they will pay 15 million how much will they recoup? Besides the concessions and kick backs they enjoy a ton of tax money gained from all the sales involved with the Coyotes and the business at Westgate. Knowing it will cost them 6.5 to run the arena without the Coyotes, it comes down to how much of the 8.5 will come back from taxes, parking, naming, etc. Sadlyother cities are ready to pay $200 million or more just to get a franchise. You can talk about why they failed to turn a profit in the past but you should focus on the culture of hockey growing in Phoenix. Kids are playing now, in school, in leagues, etc.

Mike Smith is a loveable ambassador for kids 5-55 with his crazy flowing locks and his cartoon Coyote mask. He is adored and a welcome signing.
