Arizona Coyotes’ #30 Draft Choice May Just Be Another Prospect With Promise

Arizona Coyotes 30th overall selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on June 26th found the team selecting a talented young prospect by the name of Nick Merkley. He also appears to resemble Tom Cruise a bit… or it is just me?

He had 20 goals, and 70 assists in 72 games for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. With that many assists, it looks Merkley likes to pass more than shoot, but we shall see if he scores more next season.

The Arizona Coyotes had a good draft, and for Merkley to fall to them at #30, it just shows they are loading up their young prospects for success in the future.

The Coyotes got a good value at #30, since Merkley was ranked at #15 by Hockey News, and #23 on Central Scouting’s final listing. He comes in at 5′ 10″, 191 lbs, just turned 18 last month. He is a great playmaker, and loves to set up his line mates.

When Merkley was at the rookie prospect camp he looked like a player who could eventually fit into the Arizona Coyotes’ lineup. More than likely, he will return to the WHL for more seasoning. He just turned 18 on May 23rd, and has a promising future if he continues to play so well.

Here’s his statistics:

Elite prospects describes Merkley as follows:

A playmaking center that has an excellent eye for the game; sees the ice like a hawk from above. Creates scoring chances and on-ice energy through taking advantage of puck-possession and making the most of turnovers.

Incredible work ethic; will battle against larger players and isn’t afraid to do the dirty work in front of the net. Does not possess the largest frame or a dynamic level of skating; however, he does boast a remarkably high level of Hockey-IQ and a deep understanding of the game. There is something left to be desired having observed his individual skills, such as puckhandling, footspeed, and decision-making, for a prolonged period of time; there is definitely room for improvement in the small areas of his game. All-in-all, Merkley brings a medley of skill, smarts, and work ethic to the table, making him an invaluable asset as a Center. (Curtis Joe, EP 2014)
