Behind Enemy Lines: Los Angeles Kings

The reigning Stanley Cup champions come to Arizona in a highly anticipated matchup between the Kings and the Coyotes. This Pacific Division rivalry hit its peak in the 2012 Western Conference Final and has not let up since then. Cheers of “Beat LA” will rain down in Gila River Arena tonight as our desert dogs will not stand to fall short to this California team. The talent on the opposing roster is nothing short of extraordinary, so the Arizona Coyotes will need to fire on all cylinders to claim their first win of the regular season. Howlin’ Hockey highlights some of LA’s big names to watch for tonight as the Arizona Coyotes take on the Los Angeles Kings.

Jonathan Quick (Goaltender):

One of the best in the league, Jonathan Quick’s unique playing style is a thorn in the side to all centers and wingers. Past honors include the Conn Smythe Trophy (2011-2012) and the William M. Jennings Trophy (2013-2014). Quick has a career goals against average of 2.22 and a save percentage of .923 making it tough to get pucks by him. His acrobatics are enjoyable to watch to say the least and will have viewers wondering how he is stopping those shots. Advice to beat him? Keep firing. Pepper Quick with shots early; some will get through.

Dustin Brown (Right Wing):

The captain in black is hard hitting and never afraid to get down and dirty. Opposing players should watch out as he finishes his checks and plays through the whistle. Keep your head up and watch out for his presence on the ice. His style of play is fundamental, nothing fancy. He gets pucks deep and holds a physical forecheck in order to regain possession. Shane Doan enjoys matching up one on one with Dustin Brown in these situations. Expect ‘boos’ from the crowd when Brown steps on the ice.

Drew Doughty (Defenseman):

Drafted second overall in 2008, Drew Doughty has made a name for himself as one of the top offensive defenseman in the national hockey league. The puck is a magnet to his stick as he always looks to make a play for his squad. He is a commander from the blue line and isn’t afraid to fire a slap-shot towards the net.

Anze Kopitar (Center):

Anze Kopitar’s career point totals compliment his praise as the top Slovenian national hockey league player. Through 604 games, he has notched 202 goals and 344 assists for a total of 546 points with his explosive playing styles. At 6ft, 3in. his size is hard to match which certainly gives him an added advantage. Look for Antoine Vermette to match up with Kopitar in the faceoff circle to gain initial possession after each stoppage.

Along with the players listed above; Marian Gaborik, Jarret Stoll, Justin Williams, and Slava Voynov add depth to the LA Kings roster. This team will be a tough match up for sure but if the Coyotes compete with limited mistakes and a calm minded composure, they will come out on top.
