Arizona Coyotes give up two goal lead and lose 4-3 to Dallas

The Coyotes 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday can be summed up with just those two numbers. They represent how ineffective the Coyotes powerplay was, which continues a disturbing trend… of four straight games without a goal on the man advantage.

Even worse- the game winning goal off the stick of Ryan Garbutt with less than two minutes remaining in the game came shorthanded. The win ended a seven game winless streak for the Stars, and they had to come from behind to do it.

The game got off to a fun start, as right off the faceoff Martin Hanzal and Jamie Benn dropped the gloves. This was followed a minute and 36 seconds later by a goal from Connor Murphy, giving the Coyotes a much needed early lead against a very fragile team- which was exactly what the doctor ordered. The Coyotes continued to dominate for the entire first period, as they led in Corsi 33-13 after the first twenty minutes.

It was easily one of their best starts of the season… but they couldn’t sustain it.

The Coyotes got help from Joe Vitale in the second, when he scored his first goal as a Coyote to give his squad a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately after that goal the Stars began to step up their play. You can see it on the shot attempt chart below.

Unsurprisingly, it was Tyler Seguin who brought the Stars back in the game by scoring twice in the span of less than a minute to even the score at two late in the second period.

Despite the Coyotes’ less than stellar second period, the game seemingly still favored the Coyotes- at least on paper. The Stars were 28th in the league in goals against in the third period but once again the Coyotes failed to take advantage as they fell behind 3-2 on a goal by Eric Cole thanks to good board work in deep by the Stars. The Coyotes didn’t just keel over, though, as Mikkel Boedker found the back of the net for the first time since his third game of the season.

Boedker used that momentum to get yet another scoring chance that would have given the Coyotes the lead late in the game on the power play, but Kari Lehtonen robbed Boeds- it was probably his best save of the game, and definitely his biggest.

Less than 40 seconds later, the Stars sealed the game on Garbutt’s shorty.

The Coyotes are now scoreless on their last 20 power play chances. That stat is mind boggling, considering the personnel the Coyotes have on their man advantages- Keith Yandle and Oliver Ekman-Larson, two of the best scoring blue-liners in the league.

The loss also marks the second straight where the Coyotes have given up goals with less than two minutes to go in the third period.

Next up for the Coyotes is a three game road trip to western Canada.
