It’s hard to be a hockey fan and not have the utmost respect for Dave Tippett, so Arizona Coyotes fans should be beyond thankful to call him their own.

In a league where sometimes even the most star-studded rosters fall short of expectations under certain coaches and mentors, the Arizona Coyotes have been elevated almost beyond their current talent level under the direction of this coaching veteran. Tippett — who was an undrafted player himself, yet went on to represent Team Canada in the 1992 Olympics — has only missed the playoffs three times in his eleven years as a team head coach.
Part of the reason Tippett is so good (and why the Coyotes, who are one of the poorest teams in the NHL, are so good as well) is because he looks for value in players, not just raw talent. He’s notorious for giving his prospects ample development time in the minors — and while this means the team might go through a rebuild year or two (which very well might be what this season is), he gets top line players out of nearly every draft class. Considering Tobias Rieder was a fourth-rounder for the Oilers and he’s looking a whole lot better than Nail Yakupov right now… Arizona, count your blessings with this coach.
Dave Tippett may not be coaching the Chicago Blackhawks or the Boston Bruins this season, but he holds his players to the standards every coach should — he rewards them for trying their best, and penalizes them for not giving one hundred percent. This former Jack Adams winner deserves the admiration of all of us this Thanksgiving.
