Remembering When Shane Doan beat Dustin Brown in a fight

Of all the Arizona Coyotes skaters, Shane Doan may hate the Los Angeles Kings the most.

The Coyotes have built a pretty fun rivalry with the LA Kings since the Coyotes moved to Arizona in 1996, and that rivalry didn’t get any better than the 2012 Western Conference Final — but my favorite moment from the rivalry took place a few months beforehand, in February 2012.

It wasn’t a goal or a great save that stuck in my memory, though. Instead, I remember an… altercation…. between Shane Doan and Dustin Brown. It was merely the two captains having a little on-ice disagreement — but the end result was even better than Coyotes fans could have ever hoped for, and what made it memorable.

I’ll wait while you watch the video on a loop for ten minutes….

Pretty apparent who won, right? It was definitely a unanimous decision victory for Captain Coyote. Don’t take my word for it either. Head to this fight’s page on hockey fights, and the voters chose Doan as the winner by a margin of 87 percent — there was a measly one percent of voter support for the Kings captain.

The fight was initiated minutes before the gloves were truly dropped, when Rusty Klesla (eternal Kings victim) was the recipient of a suspect hit from Dustin Brown. The kept Klesla out for the rest of the hockey game… and Doaner wasn’t amused.

You have to love Shane Doan for what happened next — he went straight up to his counterpart at the face-off, and asked to go.

This wasn’t the only fight during the game either; there were a total of four fights in the game, with three coming in the first period alone (including Doan’s beatdown of Brown).

Who knows if we will ever see these two throw down again, but I’m certainly rooting for a re-match. My money would be on Doan all day every day.

The great thing about this fight is that neither guy is much of a fighter. Dustin Brown has had either one or zero fights in a season every year since 2008. Doaner is very similar in that he has had nine total fights since the 2006 season.

The game itself was essentially a preview of what was to come during the Western Conference final battle. The Coyotes took home the victory in a 1-0 shutout behind Mike Smith and thanks to a goal by “The Wizard” Ray Whitney. The full game highlights are below
