“Smitty… aren’t we having a tough enough game? Elbowing me in the stomach is not going to help!” –Michael Stone-Arizona Coyotes defenseman

Michael Stone was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the third round of the 2008 NHL entry draft with the 69th overall pick — and he’s been quite the steal, considering.

  • After playing three seasons with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL (where he put up 50 G, 109 A , 36 PPG ), he moved up to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL upon hitting the requisite age eligibility, rather than heading to the NHL.

It paid off, too — he only spent one full season in the AHL, before splitting his time between the Portland Pirates and the Coyotes the following season. He then played in 70 games for the Coyotes last season, with respectable results — 8 G, 13 A, and 2 PPG.

He has a great shot from the point, although it’s hard to decide whether he needs to shoot more or continue to develop a massive blue line presence. He led all NHL defenseman in blocked shots into the holiday break, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down his play any time soon. I like his size and physical play — at only 24, he has some real potential. He could easily transition to eventually take Zbynek Michalek‘s place on the right side of Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who needs a stay at home defenseman to pair up with him.
