Looking Back at the Arizona Coyotes Vets: Daymond Langkow

The Arizona Coyotes Could Have Had Who?

Daymond Langkow began his stint with the then Phoenix Coyotes on July 2, 2001 when the Philadelphia Flyers traded him to Phoenix for a second round draft choice in ’02, and Phoenix’s 1st round draft choice in the ’03 Entry Draft, which wound up being Jeff Carter. Yep, the same Jeff Carter who has scored 70 goals in 176 games with his current team, the L.A. Kings. Funny how things turn out.

Not that Langkow wasn’t a quality two way player, he was– but JEFF CARTER? I just bet the Coyotes were kicking themselves after that trade. Daymond had some good numbers too.. scoring 30 goals twice in his career with the Calgary Flames, and tallying 50 points in eight consecutive seasons dating from ’99-’08.

How Langkow Began His NHL Career

He was originally selected as the fifth overall pick in the ’95 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. In his ’96-’97 debut rookie season, he scored 15 goals and 28 points. His production fell off the following year to just 22 points, and the Lightning wanted to demote him to the AHL Adirondack Red Wings. When Langkow refused to report he was suspended indefinitely. The team told the media they weren’t interested in trading him.

He missed seven games and $63,000 in salary before the team recalled him to finish the season in Tampa. He was assigned to the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL beginning in the ’98-’99 season for four games, and the trade rumors were flying. He was finally traded to the Philadelphia Flyers along with Michael Renberg on December 12,1998 for Chris Gratton and Mike Sillinger.

When the Flyers acquired Jeremy Roenick in the summer of ’01, it left Landkow, a restricted free agent, the odd man out. He was then dealt to the Coyotes. Again, Landkow had his disagreements with management, and the Coyotes went to arbitration giving him a two year deal worth $4.2M.

He showed the Yotes he was worthy of the new contract by scoring his first career hat trick in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals in the home opener. He became a fan favorite due to his diligence on the boards, and excellent fore-checking ability. He went on to lead the team with 62 points, including 27 goals, during the ’01-’02 season. The next year he came in with 52 points. During his three year stint with the team he only missed 3 games.

Time to Move on..

On August 26, 2004 Phoenix traded Langkow to the Calgary Flames for Dennis Gauthier, and Oleg Saprykin. He played there for five seasons, and in ’06-’07 he scored 33 goals, and 44 assists for his all-time high scoring statistics.

On August 29, 2011 Calgary traded him back to Phoenix for Lee Stempniak. After a less than productive season, Langkow retired on July 7, 2013.
