Portland Pirates March 2015 Update

Portland Pirates Making a Run For The Calder Cup Playoffs

Since our last update on the Arizona Coyotes AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates have moved into sixth position of the Eastern Conference, with a 35-22-3-1 record good for 74 points. They trail the fifth place Providence Bruins by just three points, with 2 games in hand. At their current pace they should finish with 92 points, which will more than qualify them for the playoffs.

They have been on a seven game winning streak spanning from 2-28-15 to their last game on 3-14-15. They don’t play again until 3-20-15 when they face the Hershey Bears. Too bad too, because when a team is running on all cylinders like this, you want to keep it going.

With 15 games remaining on the schedule, and 10 at home, the prospects look promising for the Pirates. Keep in mind that the parent Arizona Coyotes have been recalling players at a pretty good clip, as they are in a “retooling” phase, trying out players to see what they may add to the lineup.

  • The long list of players called up at various times for mostly shorter stints includes:

Justin Hodgman, Tyler Gaudet, Lucas Lessio, Alex Bolduc, Jordan Martinook, Philip Samuelsson, Henrik Samuelsson, Brendan Shinnimin, Louis Domingue, Mike McKenna, Dylan Reese, Brandon Gormley, and Andrew Campbell.

To say the Pirates have acclimated is an understatement. Their strength seems to be in their goaltending. Mike McKenna has played exceptionally with his 24 wins, 14 losses, 6 shutouts and a 2.05 GAA, .934 SV%. Louis Domingue has also performed admirably with 10 wins, 6 losses, 1 SOL and a 2.57 GAA, .912 SV%. With goaltending skills like these two guys possess, the Portland Pirates will do well in the playoffs, where goaltending strength is imperative.

If the Calder Cup playoffs were to start tomorrow, the Pirates would be matched up against the Syracuse Crunch, who retain third place in the conference standings. That would fare will with the Portland Pirates, as they have won both outings with the Crunch, taking a  2-1 decision in Portland, and then crunching them 5-2 in Syracuse on March 6th.

All in all, the young players in Portland have faired well this season, and their fate is much better than their parent Arizona Coyotes. With the list of exciting draft choices like Christain Dvorak, Brendan Perlini, Laurent Dauphin, Ryan MacInnis added to the players the Portland Pirates already have on their roster, the future of the Arizona Coyotes is as bright as the desert sun.

Let’s cheer on the Portland Pirates as they make a run at the playoffs!

    GO PIRATES ! !
