Arizona Coyotes: Lease Battle Secondary To Draft

With Battle Lines Drawn On Arizona Coyotes Arena Lease, Let’s Not Forget The Upcoming NHL Draft

It’s easy to get distracted with all the media attention that has been exhibited towards the City of Glendale vs the Arizona Coyotes. What seems to be more important from an organization’s success in the future is the chance to draft promising young prospects who will help this team win hockey games.

You see winning gets contagious (sorta like the media attention thrown at the arena controversy), and brings fans into the arena to watch their team play the most exciting game on ice, NHL hockey. GM Don Maloney has had distractions before — like bankruptcies, no team owner, abiding by NHL budgets to run a team… you name it. Now, with this latest hurdle to jump over, will he be able to even attract free agents, or prospects to want to come to the Valley of the Sun to play NHL hockey?

Most of us want to feel confident that when we move our families to a new city, that we will be there for a reasonable amount of time. I mean with children in school, meeting new friends and neighbors there are roots to be planted to allow the family to feel welcome and wanted in their new home.

If only the City of Glendale would see these things, they may not have acted so shockingly in voting to end the agreed upon lease they signed two years ago, which still has 13 more years before it ends. When a tenant and a landlord don’t get along, it becomes an issue which is difficult, if not impossible to ignore.

Even if the City of Glendale licks it’s wounds, the Arizona Coyotes have been irreparably injured by their actions. Look at the nationwide publicity (not the favorable type you would want) that this story is receiving. The fans of the team in all of this are rallying — what else can they do? Their team has been spit on, disrespected before, so if it’s possible to get accustomed to that abuse, they are doing their best to move on and hope that their team remains here and doesn’t relocate.

On June 26th, this team has the third overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, and they are focusing on that. They must — it’s their job. Many are still speculating who will don an Arizona Coyotes uniform when the Commissioner announces their selection. Will it be Noah Hanifin (who has dropped to #5 or #6 on some lists), or will it be Dylan Strome (the most logical choice), or even Mitch Marner (who is skyrocketing to perhaps the third choice) who gets chosen?

Also to be considered is will GM Don Maloney and his team decide to trade down in the draft to perhaps obtain some instant talent in pursuit of bettering this team quickly? That’s the fun of the draft — the uncertainty of what will happen. And, that is what we should be excited about, not whether the Glendale mayor is trying to collect publicity by getting shot with a taser gun to raise money for a good charity.

My personal prediction for the Arizona Coyotes’ third overall pick: Mitch Marner

I know I had pegged Dylan Strome earlier, but Marner has so much potential, and if you can imagine him playing with Max Domi and Anthony Duclair it kinda gives you goosebumps, which is a far better feeling than being shot by a taser gun.
