Arizona Coyotes: New Arena With Suns

It May Be The Best Solution For The Homeless Arizona Coyotes

Whenever the desert dust settles after a dust storm, there is a quiet calm that commences.  The hope concerning the present state of affairs revolving around the Arizona Coyotes is that once the attorneys, and judicial system have completed their tasks, the dust will settle and the team will find a new LOCAL home.

Many have already written them off, and have the moving vans rolling up to Gila River Arena to pack up things to move the team to Seattle, Las Vegas, Kansas City, or Portland — or you fill in the blanks.

The local politicians have something to say about that, since for one thing it would take the Valley out of the “club” of U.S. cities who have all four major professional sports. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton as well as Governor Ducey have expressed their support to keep The Arizona Coyotes in the local area, and oppose having them leave.

As politicians they realize the financial impact that would transpire if the beleaguered hockey team were forced to relocate.

That brings us to the rumored solution to the Arizona Coyotes homelessness. Build a new arena in downtown Phoenix where both the Phoenix Suns AND the Coyotes can call home. Suns owner Robert Sarver has been hinting that he’s in favor of a new arena to replace the aging, soon to be renamed Talking Stick arena.

Of course this is just speculation, but food for thought. It would take minimum two to three years to build a new arena.

What’s been rumored is either knocking down U.S. Airways Center, or building a new building across the street where a civic plaza seldom used building is now located.

What would happen to the U S. Airways Center in that scenario? It’s been reported, that perhaps a downtown shopping mall would be considered to keep in line with the objective of rebuilding downtown Phoenix.

If none of this goes down, it seems that the current U.S. Airways Center could be used short term by the Arizona Coyotes, even with the obstructed view upper deck seats.

It certainly should appease the east valley fans, who are fed up traveling ALL THE WAY to Glendale.

Even though those of us residing near Glendale now will need to travel further, and contend with parking challenges, to keep the team here, it would be worthwhile.
