Arizona Coyotes Max Domi’s Shot At Calder Trophy

Arizona Coyotes’ Max Domi has yet to play a regular season NHL game, and already he is being pegged as a candidate for the Calder Trophy, given to the best rookie of the year

The Toronto Sun’s Michael Traikos mentioned Domi’s name in a potential list of rookies in line to steal the award away from Connor McDavid, or Jack Eichel.

Arizona Coyotes’ Max Domi, who was selected 13th overall in 2013, is two years older than McDavid, and could be the offensive centerpiece on a offensively weak Coyotes team. This may draw more attention to his worth for the award, since McDavid and Eichel have been getting all the press on what their potential will be for their rookie seasons.

Domi doesn’t boost about being a possible candidate for any award. That extra year developing on the London Knights OHL team really matured him in ways which show he is ready for the NHL, in a big way.

You can sense how humble he is when he commented on just making the team:

“I just want to make the team,” Domi said this week after an informal skate with other Coyotes in Scottsdale. “I’m not looking too far ahead. There’s a lot of young guys here that are trying to come in and earn a spot, too.”

What will make his success even more noticeable will be if he is allowed to play on the same line with Anthony Duclair. Add in Christian Dvorak, and you’ve got one strong offensive line…strong but also very young, and inexperienced. Knowing how GM Don Maloney brings his prospects along on baby food, before he gives them steak, Domi will not peak for a couple years. He will be trying to absorb as much as he can in training camp to be ready for the BIG TIME.

If Domi were to win the Calder, it would be the first time since the team moved to Arizona from Winnipeg. But, like he said he’s not looking into the future, and that could be a wise decision. Too many young players get on the wrong path, or have too much expected of them way too early, and they fail miserably.

This young prospect has all the potential of any rookies this upcoming season. He’s a slick puck handler, has good speed to the puck, and is difficult to knock down, due to his fire-plug physique. He also matured in his last season in the OHL to show he can distribute the puck, and not think he must do it all himself. Once his scoring abilities are noticed, he will draw defenders to him, and he can dish off the biscuit to his line-mates, making him a duel threat.

I personally can’t remember being this excited about a young prospect starting play on the Arizona Coyotes since I started following them when they re-located here in 1996. There’s every indication that Max Domi will be a star player in the NHL, and to know he is on the Arizona Coyotes is all the more to celebrate.

Whether he wins the Calder or not, he will be one special player, you don’t miss out seeing him
