Arizona Coyotes Training Camp Scrimmage Game

It was the Arizona Coyotes red team against the white team in the Sunday scrimmage game, with three 15 minute periods.

It was the red team against the white team, with the red taking an early 3-0 lead, only to see the white team steam back to tie the game, and eventually win 4-3. The two teams played a practice 3-on-3 overtime period, with Henrik Samuelsson netting the only goal.

Dakota Mermis, Anthony Duclair, and Jason Martinook scored for the red team. While the scorers for the white team was Christian Fischer (twice), Lucas Lessio, and Ryan MacInnis.

Christian Fischer raised his stock by scoring two goals. There were officials at the game, and when a penalty was called, a penalty shot was used instead. Fischer and MacInnis both had penalty shot goals.

Dylan Strome hit the post for the red team in the first period, and took some faceoffs as well. He also missed a dead on shot from the slot after receiving an excellent pass. So far, he hasn’t played poorly, just nothing spectacular to change management’s mind that he needs to develop further in the OHL.

Anthony Duclair looked ready, as he made a swirling move to get around a defender, leaving him flat-footed. Max Domi was not out there for this scrimmage. I’m sure the two will be the focus when the Arizona Coyotes take on other pre-season opponents before the season opener on October 9th in L.A.

The rosters listed for tonight’s game show Duclair, but not Domi. So, we won’t see the magic the two can create when they’re both on the ice simultaneously. Domi was spotted skating with the veterans this morning, so maybe he’s already made the roster. Each team must suit up at least eight veteran players for preseason games. I’m sure we’ll see Max Domi perform his magic soon enough.

Martinook, Szwarz, Cunningham, Philip and Henrik Samuelsson, Tyler Gaudet, Lucas Lessio, Brendan Shimmimin, Stefan Elliott and Dylan Reese are all getting a closer look so evaluations can be made on the roster.

After the scrimmage game, GM Don Maloney made some cuts:

Kyle Capobianco, Conor Garland, Adin Hill, Nick Merkley, were all sent to their respective junior teams.

In addition, Joey Crabb, Maxwell James, and Austyn Playfair were released from their professional or amateur tryout agreements. That cuts the roster to 56, and by the end of the week, Head Coach Dave Tippett, and GM Don Maloney are expected to get the roster down by at least half of that total.
