Arizona Coyotes: Louis Domingue Named NHL’s Rookie Of The Month For January
Arizona Coyotes goaltender Louis Domingue was named the NHL’s rookie of the month for January after putting up a stellar .925 save percentage along with a 6-3-2 record.
The Arizona Coyotes have a new NHL rookie of the month.
Though his last name starts with Domi, the recipient is not Max Domi as many would have expected when the season began.
It’s actually Louis Domingue. That’s probably not a name the team or it’s fans would’ve expected to see up in lights at the beginning of October, but here we are.
What a reward well earned.
Domingue had a 2.20 goals against average and a .925 save percentage in the month of January while leading the team to a 6-3-2 record in his starts.
Here is the Arizona Coyotes’ press release:
Domingue edged Chicago Blackhawks left wing Artemi Panarin (6-6—12 in 14 GP), Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel (5-6—11 in 12 GP), Winnipeg Jets right wing Nikolaj Ehlers (7-3—10 in 12 GP) and Calgary Flames center Sam Bennett (8-0—8 in 11 GP) for the honor. Domingue, a fifth-round selection (138th overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft, allowed two or fewer goals in seven of his 11 appearances. That included his second career shutout, a 26-save performance against the Nashville Predators Jan. 9. In doing so, Domingue became the second rookie goaltender in franchise history to register multiple shutouts in one season (also Robert Esche: 2 in 2000-01). Domingue, who has appeared in 24 career NHL games, owns a 9-5-3 record with a 2.31 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and two shutouts in 17 outings this season. He joins Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (October), Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin (November) and Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson (December) as Rookie of the Month winners in 2015-16.
Domingue joins Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson on the list as the only two goaltenders named rookie of the month.
Not surprisingly, the two goaltenders have very similar numbers.
Gibson is 11-7-2 overall this season with a .923 save percentage, while Domingue is 14-9-5 with a .924 save percentage. The Pacific Division has some good young goalies for the future already making an impact.

For the Arizona Coyotes, Domingue’s consistent play has shored up what was one of the major holes in the roster prior to Mike Smith‘s injury.
Louis has been incredibly consistent in net for the Yotes since taking over. His calm demeanor has given confidence to the team in front of him. Meanwhile Domingue has shown that he is capable of shaking off a bad or untimely goal to hang in there for his team.
Coming out of the All-Star break, the Coyotes hopes are riding on the back of Domingue and the hope that he will maintain the form he showcased in January.
If he manages another solid month in February, the return of Mike Smith at the end of the month may become much ado about nothing.
