The Arizona Coyotes came out of the trade deadline with a whimper. They were shutout 6-0 by the Penguins on Monday night behind Patric Hornqvist’s hat trick.

Final. 0. 121. 6. 92

The Arizona Coyotes added Sergei Plotnikov and traded Mikkel Boedker at the deadline. Jiri Sekac played his first game for Arizona after being claimed on waivers.

Alex Tanguay will be joining the team once they return to Glendale.

Unfortunately for Coyotes fans and the team, they are returning to Gila River Arena with a six game losing streak in tow.

Patric Hornqvist got the scoring started 5:42 into the first period. Hornqvist scored again late in the first to put the Pens up 2-0.

Midway through the second period, Chris Kunitz got the Pittsburgh Penguins on the board again to get off to a commanding 3-0 lead. Patric Hornqvist completed the hat trick less than two minutes later.

Kris Letang and Matt Cullen scored within 16 seconds of each other with less than two minutes left in the 3rd period to punctuate the beatdown.

Pittsburgh Penguins win 6-0.

The View From The 200 Level

Don Maloney spoke to the media after the trade deadline and stated that the Arizona Coyotes could have traded Kyle Chipchura and Nicklas Grossmann but wanted to remain competitive.

More from Howlin' Hockey

I’m not really sure that Chip and Gross are the pieces to keep the Yotes in the thick of games. I feel like we could have some AHL prospects pop in and fill in for those guys decently enough at this point in their careers.

Regardless, the past six games have proven that the Arizona Coyotes are anything but competitive at this point in the season.

The goal scoring has dried up by and large. Louis Domingue has came back to Earth and is beginning to show a tendency to let in soft goals much like the oft-maligned Mike Smith.

Despite trailing the entire length of the game, the Arizona Coyotes were outshot by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Max Domi had just one shot on net and Anthony Duclair had none. The Coyotes will definitely need more from them going forward after the trade of Boedker.

There was much talk from Don Maloney over the past week or so about not throwing in the towel, but as we’ve said previously…this is not the Coyotes’ year. Next year won’t be either.

Each year in the progression should get better, however, and the false positive of this great start this season shouldn’t be held against the process. The underlying numbers were always ugly. What we’ve seen in the past month or two is simply regression to the mean.

Don Maloney and company are making the right moves the majority of the time. What that means, however, is that the present could get a little ugly.

Keep watching for the Duclomi goals, Oliver Ekman-Larsson magic, and a wild ride for Shane Doan anyway. There’s still a lot to love.

The Arizona Coyotes play the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.
