The Arizona Coyotes and new General Manager John Chayka made a splash by trading for Pavel Datsyuk’s dead contract in order to move up to 16th overall and select Jakob Chychrun. Reactions were mixed, however.
As an organization, the Arizona Coyotes have spent this offseason taking great strides to distance themselves from the stereotypes and behaviors that once plagued them.
In the middle of the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft, however, one of the more nagging complaints about the Yotes arose from the dead once again. The Yotes took on yet another dead contract to help out a contending team. The fanbase and analysts were mixed on how they felt about it.
By taking on Pavel Datsyuk’s contract, General Manager John Chayka was able to move up and secure the defenseman he considered drafting at 7th overall.
Not everyone saw that as a good thing.
Arizona Coyotes and John Chayka Got Fleeced By Detroit
Some felt that Chayka was fleeced by Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland. In particular, many fans and critics took issue with the inclusion of the second round draft pick in the trade.
Red Wings got out from Datsyuk's big cap hit for very little. They were haggling all week. One of most experienced GMs vs one of least.

Coyotes are great at trading for players who will never play

Arizona Coyotes and John Chayka Did A Great Job
It wasn’t all doom and gloom. Many thought that John Chayka and the new Arizona Coyotes front office structure had a stellar first day of the draft.
There’s no denying that for better or worse the organization got the players they wanted, at the very least.
#Coyotes trade up & Jakob Chychrun 16th overall. Top 10 talent who will prove doubters wrong. "Off year" doesn't define his tools/upside

John Chayka could not be having a better draft. I truly believe this.

Arizona land Clayton Keller and Jakob Chychrun. I'd say they are a winner today.

Coyotes already ranked No. 1 farm system in Future Watch. Now add Keller and Chychrun to the pool? Scary. Fun time for Arizona.

Reaction From Jakob Chychrun
Mr. Chychrun seemed plenty happy to come play hockey in the desert for the Arizona Coyotes. After falling from a lofty spot of projected 2nd overall pick at the beginning of last season, perhaps 16th overall will light a mighty fire under the young defender.

Looking forward to it my man! https://t.co/Tn9eSOOfSh
