The Arizona Coyotes find themselves on a three-game winning streak and goaltender Darcy Kuemper has been putting in his best performances of the season.

Wins against the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers now see the Arizona Coyotes sitting just four points outside of the wildcard spots.

For many teams in hockey, their success largely hinges on the performances of the guy standing between the pipes – with the Coyotes being no exception.

The team began the season slowly but then looked like legitimate playoff contenders while starter Antti Raanta was playing himself into Vezina consideration.

Two Raanta injuries later, one of which has ended his season, and the Coyotes now sport a tandem of Kuemper and Adin Hill – with the latter looking very impressive in his brief appearances in the NHL so far.

At the end of 2018, the Coyotes were on a downward swing and Kuemper, who has been named the team’s starter, was having a difficult time – sporting a regular season record of 5-11-2.

Since the turn of the year, Kuemper has posted a 3-0-1 record, dropping just one point in his last four starts – with the team being 3-1-1 overall in 2019.

Kuemper picked up his first shutout of the season in a 5-0 rout of the Rangers and has posted strong save numbers over the past four games.

The former sixth round (161st overall) selection of the Minnesota Wild in 2009 has allowed seven goals in his last four games, posting an impressive .946 save percentage, averaging 1.75 goals against.

With these four strong performances, Kuemper improved his season averages to a .914 save percentage and 2.66 goals against average.

The Arizona Coyotes find themselves in an interesting situation, with decisions to be made regarding the overall aim of the rest of the season.

The team are now just four points away from the wildcard places, but they are also just four points away from the last-placed LA Kings in the Western Conference.

If Rick Tocchet’s team have legitimate hopes of pushing for the playoffs, the team must hope that Kuemper’s recent impressive form continues and that the team can continue putting together a string of victories.
