Reports have emerged that suggest the Arizona Coyotes could be getting closer to having a new majority owner, ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The future of the Arizona Coyotes has been a regular topic for discussion in recent years and it appears that the team could have a new majority owner before the puck drops on the 2019/20 season.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that current owner Andrew Barroway is in discussions over the sale of the majority of his stake in the team, though things are not quite finalised – potentially needing time over the summer to bridge the gap.

However, it does appear that some ground has been gained between Barroway and the interested parties, though any deal would still see the American businessman still retain a small share – seeing him extend his five-year involvement with the franchise.

Any talks of new ownership will undoubtedly raise questions about the team’s long-term future in the state of Arizona, with rumours of a move to Houston having subsided during the team’s strong push towards the playoffs this season.

With no hockey to be played until late September, rumours of a move will unsurprisingly resurface until the new ownership steps forward and makes their intentions known to the fanbase.

The Arizona Coyotes are a franchise trending upwards, with plenty of positive strides having already taken place over the past season or so, giving fans a renewed belief that the team can get back to being a regular playoff contender.

If the team is able to continue their recent improvements, their success could further aid the decision to keep the team in the desert – with a move to Houston only likely to come if the team falls on hard times that are effectively irreparable.

While discussions are likely to be ongoing over the next few months, the progress towards having new ownership could have a significant impact on the Arizona Coyotes and is a story that will be followed closely as time goes on.
