The Arizona Coyotes are set to pick 14th overall in the 2019 NHL draft and there are bound to be teams interested in trading for the team’s pick.

With the 14th overall pick in the 2019 draft, the Arizona Coyotes have the chance to bring a young goalscoring prospect into their organisation.

With the quality of depth in this year’s draft, picking 14th is a fairly safe bet for the Coyotes and should see the organisation add a legitimate future NHLer to their pool.

One thing that the Coyotes must then be aware of is possible interest from teams around the league looking to move up in the draft.

The 14th overall pick is a tempting asset for any team in the NHL, especially for teams looking to rebuild beyond this season.

It allows a team to select a young player that will cost them very little for three years after signing an ELC and would help teams that have a cap crunch to add to their system while also potentially removing a costly roster player at the same time.

It has been well-documented that the Arizona Coyotes are in need of some extra goalscoring, having finished the 2018/19 season in the bottom six in scoring.

It would be therefore a sensible move by other teams to target the team and offer a goalscoring forward that could benefit Rick Tocchet‘s side immediately.

Any pick in the draft is a risk, with some players that look to be certain NHL players ending up failing to live up to expectations, but the risk is certainly worth it from the perspective of the Coyotes.

The Coyotes have very few forward prospects in their system and need to start building a deeper pool to choose from – ensuring a regular stream of players over the next few seasons.

The likes of Arthur Kaliyev and Alex Newhook could be available at the 14th pick and would be sensible choices by the organisation, able to step up in a season or two of further development.

While an existing NHL player could have a more immediate impact on the team, they could come at a significant cost and may even have a significantly shorter contract – opening the Coyotes up to the possibility of losing them in free agency.

Having a prospect in their pool, able to be moulded in the team’s image, is something the Coyotes shouldn’t give away – even if they can have an impact player for a season or two.

The Arizona Coyotes have a real opportunity with the 14th overall pick and general manager John Chayka should stand pat and pick a player at that position.
