Josh Doan, Son of Arizona Coyotes Legend Shane Doan, Commits to Arizona State
Josh Doan, the son of retired Coyotes legend Shane Doan, has decided to remain close to home for college.
The Arizona State Sun Devils announced today that Josh Doan has committed to play for the hockey program at the conclusion of his juniors career. Doan, 17, is a Scottsdale native who has been playing for the Junior Coyotes. He is expected to start playing for ASU in 2021.
Shane Doan played his entire NHL career for the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise, spanning three different decades from 1995 until 2017. Doan had his number 19 jersey retired last season in a game against the new Winnipeg Jets.
For the younger Doan, he joins the only D-1 hockey program west of the Rockies, a team which has surged quickly, joining the NCAA as an independent program in the 2015-16 season, and by this past season, making their first NCAA tournament appearance.
College hockey in the Valley of the Sun has been a success at the box office and on the recruiting trail, as Doan joins a program which features Austin Lemieux, son of Mario, and also has commitments from Carson Briere, son of former Coyotes center Daniel Briere, as well as Scott Niedermayer’s son Jackson.
ASU had held talks with the Coyotes on constructing an arena in the Tempe area which would house both hockey teams, but those talks fell through in 2017, as the Sun Devils will soon move into a new multipurpose arena in Tempe, and the Coyotes still look to replace Gila River Arena with a new home.
