In an interesting turn of events, the greatest sports prospect in Arizona history comes home to face the Arizona Coyotes for Christmas.

During the draft this offseason, Coyotes fans held their breathe when the Toronto Maple Leafs stepped up to the selection podium.

More from Howlin' Hockey

Many hoped that the Coyotes would trade some pieces to get hometown product Auston Matthews in some miraculous turn of events. Others were relieved that the team didn’t mortgage the team’s future on a single player, whether he’s from Canada or Scottsdale.

Nonetheless, Auston Matthew’s first game against his hero Shane Doan and the Arizona Coyotes at home in Glendale will be a game to remember.

Matthews grew up a hockey fan because of the Coyotes.

He got started in youth hockey because of the Coyotes and he broke into the league due in part to the efforts made by the Coyotes’ youth hockey development programs.

This game is a point of pride in Arizona’s hockey timeline, and it will certainly be a night many fans won’t forget for a long time.
